We give thanks for the life of Helen M. Kukuk, who died on April 15, 2016.
Helen was a longtime member of University Lutheran Church. She began attending while a student at the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, from which she graduated in 1954. Over the years, she served in many key leadership positions, including Church Council president, financial secretary, and Stewardship Committee member. She was always ready to welcome new students and others to the community and was well known for her hospitality.
In her later years, when vision and mobility problems threatened to restrict her vigorous life, Helen’s wide network of friends pitched in to help with driving, shopping, and other chores, allowing her to live independently for many years. Helen loved to travel, and enjoyed trips to Alaska and Europe with friends even during her last decade.
A memorial service took place at University Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 14, 2016. You may read or listen to the sermon by Pastor Kathleen O’Keefe Reed and read the remembrance by her longtime friend Gail Bucher. Donations in Helen’s memory may be made to Lutheran World Relief or Health Care Without Walls.

Pastor Kathleen Reed wrote to the congregation, “Helen selected the hymn ‘Lift High the Cross’ for her service. Humming the lyric about the love of Christ being proclaimed gives me strength for this time, and I commend that hymn for all our hearts to sing together.”
