University Lutheran Church will host "Music by Heart: Paperless Songs for Worship," a two-day workshop led by Emily M D Scott, on Friday, October 23 and Saturday October 24, 2009.

About Paperless Songs for Worship

Paperless songs are at once beautiful and simple. They are accessible to all types of singers while also holding incredible depth. In worship, they engender an experience of community as people from diverse backgrounds easily sing and pray together. Come! Worship and practice with us! Learn to lead this style of music in your own setting, and leave equipped to invite others into Music by Heart.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone who enjoys music in a worship setting. Clergy, musicians, lay people and students of all musical abilities and backgrounds are invited to participate and learn to lead this music.

Emily M D Scott, Presenter

Emily M D ScottEmily, a liturgist in the Episcopal Church, serves as Director of Worship at Riverside Church and is founder of St. Lydia’s Community, both in Manhattan. She also directs the All Saints Company New Music Project, an association of church musicians and clergy from around the country dedicated to promoting “paperless” music that can be taught and sung by rote in congregational settings.

Emily attended Yale Divinity School and the Institute of Sacred Music where she earned her Masters of Divinity. She worked as a liturgist at Marquand Chapel and the University Church, both ecumenical houses of worship at Yale. There, she crafted worship that drew on the many and varied traditions represented in those congregations. A trained musician, Emily has also studied the intersection between worship and the arts, and is committed to facilitating conversation between the two disciplines.
