Spiritually Promiscuous?
‘Lutheran’ in a Pluralistic World

Lutherans in Diaspora 2011

Friday-Saturday, February 11-12, 2011
Harvard Divinity School and University Lutheran Church
Cambridge, Massachusetts

What does it means to be Lutheran in a pluralistic world? What does the 'fact of plurality' mean for any denominational Christian identity? What kinds of claims does it place upon us? How may our particularity as Lutherans inform our engagements with the general? How do we think about ourselves and act in relation to other faiths and people of no faith? What about 'double practice' and ‘poly practice’? And 'post-denominationalism'?

These are some of the questions that are informing our thinking as we prepare to gather divinity students from Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Union to connect, discuss candidacy and academic vocations, and consider this important set of questions as it relates to the future of the ELCA. Non-Lutheran students are also welcome to attend, though they may relate to the topic from a different set of denominational/faith commitments. We heartily welcome other perspectives in our engagement with this topic!

Our keynote speaker is Francis X. Clooney, S.J., Parkman Professor of Divinity, Professor of Comparative Theology, and Director of the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School.

Pre-registration and payment ($20) are required for this event. Browse this site for more conference details, including how to register and pay.
