The 66 Winthrop Street home of University Lutheran Church was completed in 1951. It was the first church to be built in Cambridge after World War II.
In 1996, the congregation approved preliminary plans to renovate the space to better support its ministries of worship, fellowship, campus outreach, and community service. In 1997, the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter Corporation, an independent 501(c)3 organization, was formed to join University Lutheran in a campaign to improve the portion of the building occupied by the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter during the winter months. Funded by the "Building for the Next Generation" campaign, which gathered generous contributions from individuals, businesses, congregations, foundations, Lutheran agencies, and other organizations, construction began in April 1999 and was largely completed by the end of the year.
In 2002 and 2003, additional work was made possible by a generous bequest by alumna Phyllis Louise Edwards.
